Frequently Asked Questions
How long do dental crowns last?
Dental crowns placed at Lotus Dental Studio carry a 5-year warranty when patients stay current with 6-month checkups. With proper care, most crowns last 10 to 15 years or longer. Daily flossing, regular cleanings, and avoiding chewing ice or hard candy are the best ways to extend a crown's lifespan.
Is there a difference between crowns and veneers?
Are dental crowns only for cosmetic purposes?
Do dental crowns require special maintenance?
Are crowns covered by insurance?
Most PPO insurance plans cover a portion of crown costs, especially when the crown is medically necessary (after a root canal, decay, or fracture). We accept every PPO plan and verify coverage before treatment so patients know what to expect. Cosmetic crowns may have less coverage.
Why do I need a crown instead of a filling?
Crowns are recommended when a tooth has lost too much structure to support a filling — typically after a root canal, a large cavity, or a fracture. While a filling reinforces a tooth, a crown fully covers and protects it. Dr. Atraya will explain why a crown is the right call and review filling alternatives during your appointment.
How many appointments does a crown take?
Traditional crowns at Lotus typically take two appointments. The first appointment prepares the tooth and places a temporary crown. After about two weeks, you return to have the permanent crown bonded into place.
Will a crown look like my natural teeth?
Yes. Modern porcelain crowns are color-matched to your surrounding teeth and shaped to fit your bite. Patients can typically not tell the crown apart from their natural teeth in conversation or photos.
What happens if my crown breaks?
If a crown breaks within the 5-year warranty period and the patient has stayed current with 6-month checkups, we repair or replace it at no cost. Outside the warranty period or without consistent checkups, repair costs vary depending on the damage. Call our office immediately if a crown comes loose or breaks.
